Watch the full video interview with Natasha Jovanovic, Living City Organizer at Ecology Ottawa.

Every year Ecology Ottawa runs a Tree Distribution Program where they distribute free trees throughout the entire city with the goal of greening up their community. This year, Natasha had to navigate unprecedented obstacles during her first year running the event.

In order for Ecology Ottawa to run their program, they rely on the large public events they attend where they distribute the trees. Due to covid, all of the events Ecology Ottawa normally attends were cancelled and they were left with no method for administering the trees or collecting donations. Natasha knew she had to find a different way to fundraise this year and that’s when she heard about Trellis.

“The fundraiser really took its form once we got in touch with Trellis.” – Natasha Jovanovic, Living City Organizer at Ecology Ottawa

Natasha and the team at Ecology Ottawa were hopeful they could distribute trees by the end of the year, but they didn’t know what that would look like.

After attending a live demo, Natasha was excited for the opportunity ahead and had new confidence for what Ecology Ottawa could achieve. As the world started to open up and with Trellis’ help, she and her team were able to hold a tree fundraiser utilizing many of the platform’s revenue driving features. It was different from their normal tree distribution program but turned out to be even more successful than planned! They were still able to work with their nursery partner, Ferguson Forest Centre, to provide seedlings at a discounted rate through their Trellis page. Their donors were thrilled they were able to collect their seedlings at a covid-safe pickup location after the fundraiser was complete.

Great Customer Support

“What sold me on using Trellis was all the real people who were talking to us to actually help.” – Natasha Jovanovic

Like many event organizers, Natasha and her team have never built a fundraising page from scratch. They were able to create their fundraising page easily using the Trellis templates, which included an e-commerce store, donations, information on the cause, and details on how to pick up the trees purchased. By utilizing the live support chat during the design process, Natasha knew Trellis had her back and made learning a new platform easy.

Record Results

“The results were astounding! Our original fundraising goal was set at $5,000 and we surpassed that within a couple of days from launch. We ended up raising just over $18,000.” – Natasha Jovanovic

Ecology Ottawa was able to distribute over 3,000 trees through their Trellis fundraiser, which is going to help green up the community of Ottawa. Natasha and her team also included a donation option for people who didn’t have a place for a tree but wanted to provide someone else with one. They were able to raise an extra $500 which they are going to use to purchase more trees and donate them next spring!

ecology ottawa“Trellis helps – there are people who actually respond to you. Dennis was very attentive and answered messages way more timely than I answer messages! He was so helpful and always checked in to make sure we were all good.” – Natasha Jovanovic

Because their event was such a success and the level of support they received, Natasha and her team at Ecology Ottawa are currently running their next fundraiser, The 14th Annual Eco Gala & Silent Auction using Trellis.

Every year, Fayez Sarofim & Co. presents the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. This year, the event was forced to be cancelled last minute and the tournament made a very quick and drastic change to their annual event.

Three weeks before their tournament, everything was shut down. They were ready for 40,000 people to attend their event in Houston, Texas. The tournament organizers wanted to support the Houston community in some way and hosting a virtual gala was a new and exciting way to do it.

Bronwyn Greer, Tournament Director of Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, was familiar with the national Stay at Home Gala hosted on Trellis and decided to take a shot at a virtual event herself.

Unique Event Experience

Bronwyn and her team had three weeks to pull it off. The event was very different from their usual live event, instead of watching professional tennis players on the court, the event was an entertaining interaction between the pro players and a trivia host.

“Attendees felt like they were close-up and personal with the players they would normally only see on the court.” – Bronwyn Greer, Tournament Director, U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship

The event raised just under $40,000 and it was all donated to the Houston Community, partnered with Greater Houston Community Foundation, to go towards their covid relief fund.

Easy-to-use Platform

Bronwyn had never run a charity driven event before.

“The fact that Trellis has this platform, that is essentially plug-and-play, made it a no brainer [to use Trellis]. It was very easy for us to understand it and put our stamp on it to make it our own.” – Bronwyn Greer

The event participants loved the entire experience. Bronwyn’s team was thankful they were able to help the community and put their guests in front of professional tennis players that they wanted to see.

Track Results

“I found the back-end operational side extremely easy to use. I am not a tech savvy person and the fact that I can get in there and update it and see where our sales were on a daily or hourly basis was amazing.” – Bronwyn Greer

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Trellis. The fact that it was so easy to use, the customer support is always there and you can brand the fundraiser page to meet your needs; why wouldn’t you!” – Bronwyn Greer, Tournament Director, U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship

Every year, Patronato Pro Niños hosts a large fourth of July fundraiser event outdoors with lots of food, fireworks and a whole lot of fun! This fundraiser is not only an important day to celebrate for Patronato Pro Niños but also their biggest fundraiser of the year, bringing in around $50,000 through donations, silent auctions items, ticket sales and more.

This year, due to COVID Patronato Pro Niños was forced to cancel their fundraiser, having to find a new way to fundraise.

Daniela, Nory and the rest of the Patronato Pro Niños team decided to try something new. They knew it had to be virtual but weren’t familiar with many virtual fundraising platforms. When they heard about the capabilities of Trellis, they decided to test out the platform with a smaller scale fundraiser.

Trellis thinks about everything

“Trellis thinks about everything! Making different tickets, tax receipting different parts of the ticket. Not everyone thinks of all the details the Trellis platform has. Trellis thinks of everything charities need.” – Daniela Briones, International Development Director, Patronato Pro Niños

To encourage fourth of July celebrations, Patronato Pro Niños created specialty baskets, filled with tequila, picnic and bbq supplies, and sold them through their Trellis fundraising page. The baskets were a great way to test a new virtual way of bringing in funds. The event was no replacement for their annual fourth of July event, but it helped keep them in their donors minds and has led to their full trust in Trellis as they now start to plan large scale virtual events.

“The tax receipting was amazing, the reports and insights on Trellis were amazing, and it was very easy to upload pictures and customize our page.” – Daniela Briones, International Development Director, Patronato Pro Niños

According to Nory, “people were really in love with it”, and the event created the opportunity to have some fourth of July fun delivered straight to people’s homes.

The Patronato Pro Niños team had such a positive experience working with Trellis that they have now decided to run their upcoming three-week event series on the platform too. The event will feature three large evening events, including a concert with a Candian folk singer and Mexican singer, a talk about the Mexican Cartels, and a cooking tutorial hosted by a professional Mexican chef.

Easy to use

“As someone who is not very techy, I love the ease of use with Trellis.” – Nory Contractor, Executive Director, Patronato Pro Niños

Patronato Pro Niños is eager to host more successful fundraisers on Trellis and is thankful to know that the Trellis team has its back.

Trellis has your back

“If you are new to a platform and there is no customer service, you feel like you have been thrown into the ocean and will drown. Knowing customer service is behind a product makes all the difference.”

– Nory Contractor, Executive Director, Patronato Pro Niños

“Trellis has always been there for us; every question, every thought.”

– Daniela Briones, International Development Director, Patronato Pro Niños

How does a small organization with a lean team raise 80% more than their goal with online donation campaigns? A powerful fundraising platform that drives more revenue and saves your team hours of work with automation.

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC), a non-profit organization committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured and orphaned wildlife, was familiar with online fundraising and it made large scale fundraising campaigns, needed to support their incredible impact, more manageable for their small team. But most platforms didn’t have the features AIWC needed to drive more revenue, automate tedious tasks or customize their page to meet their design and branding desires.

“I came across trellis and I liked what you had to offer: affordable, local, Canadian based. All very important things for us.” – Holly Lillie, Executive Director of AIWC

Holly and her team pay close attention to the features and usability of different fundraising platforms because it is important to her organization that they are able to structure and customize their fundraiser pages to their liking and avoid tedious tasks that no one has the man power for.

No upfront costs

For Holly, one of the best things about trellis was that her team could test the fundraiser builder without paying any upfront costs. Holly explained that she didn’t want to be committed to a platform she later found out wasn’t meeting all her needs or desires.

Trellis’ pricing allowed AIWC to take their time testing the platform and build their page to their liking without the pressure to do it quickly to avoid paying for additional costs.

The details AIWC put into their fundraiser pages was evident in the informative and engaging donations campaigns they created on trellis. AIWC’s Wildlife Baby Shower and their Christmas Campaign both surpassed their revenue goals.

Raise more money

The Wildlife Baby Shower was a crowdfunding campaign that raised over $18,000, surpassing AIWC’s goal of $15,000. On their page, AIWC shared stories and photos of patients in their hospital, highlighted their impact numbers, such as the number of animals cared for, and requested that their donors make a contribution to directly support their patients. AIWC’s Christmas Campaign also surpassed their goal of $50,000, raising over $90,000. That’s 80% more than their goal!

“It was so easy to send our fundraiser link to our donors and easy for them to use the page. Everyone loved the automatic tax receipts that were sent immediately after a donation was made and it took a huge workload off our team.” – Holly Lillie, Executive Director of AIWC

Take the advice from Holly herself: “a lot of elements from in-person events can be transitioned to an online fundraiser.” At first, it can be tricky depending on how comfortable your donor base is using online technology but that’s where the importance of a user-friendly fundraising platform comes in.

Great support

“I’d definitely recommend trellis! Other charities have asked us about our experience with trellis and we always have great feedback about the platform. What we love the most is how customizable the pages are and the support from trellis, it is really easy to get ahold of the trellis team.” – Holly Lillie, Executive Director of AIWC

A crucial fundraiser is forced to be cancelled and then what? Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta reimagined their annual luncheon into a virtual evening event to secure the necessary funds to support their projects and awards.

Until this year, Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta ran their Live Your Dream Luncheon every spring. The funds raised from this luncheon are crucial for the awards and programs Soroptimist Surrey/Delta support as this luncheon brings in the bulk of their fundraising for the year. The awards are given to women and girls going to school to improve the lives of their families, outstanding highschool volunteering and more.

This year, Soroptimist Surrey/Delta planned to host their luncheon in April, but it was postponed due to covid to the end of May. They were then forced to cancel the fundraiser they heavily rely on.

Their in person event generated funds through ticket sales, a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Their event featured speakers, a fashion show, and live musical entertainment. This year, they knew they would have to pivot. Linda explained that, at this point, they didn’t know what they were going to do.

“We were very concerned about what we would do if we didn’t have a fundraiser. Without a fundraiser, how are we going to support our projects and awards, what would we do?”

– Linda Cunliffe, President of Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta Club

Linda came across the Stay at Home Gala run by the Community Foundations of Canada on trellis. Her and a few other Soroptimist members watched the virtual evening event and thought “we can do that, but we have no idea how.” A virtual event was a perfect way to hold onto a few of the key elements of their luncheon and was still possible to run amongst covid.

Linda and her team began to research how they were going to pull this off. They attended our live calls with a fundraising specialist, dove into our resource guide on running virtual galas and dinner events, and got creative about how to add revenue drivers to their virtual event.

“What sold us on trellis was that it was local and Canada based… more extensive event pages than Eventbrite, the prices were great…most of our donors covered the fees so it didn’t cost us anything.” – Linda Cunliffe, President of Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta Club

With the help of our resources and a team of creative and motivated volunteers, Soroptimist Surrey/Delta ran their first virtual fundraiser event in place of their annual luncheon. Linda was thrilled to be able to invite guests from outside of Surrey or Delta and host a global event.

Soroptimist Surrey/Delta were not able to hold a 50/50 because they sold tickets to multiple provinces and, because of shipping complications, turned their basket raffle into a smaller scaled silent auction. Their virtual event drove in revenue through ticket sales, a silent auction, e-commerce items, and donations.

Trellis’ user friendly donation buttons helped Soroptimist Surrey/Delta secure more donations than their in person event and powered people to donate if they were unable to purchase a ticket.

Linda and her team did a fabulous job producing the content for the show. They prerecorded most elements, to ensure they would be polished and on time, and had live segments in-between. The show featured a fashion show, music, speakers, a live comedian and more.

Trellis made it easy:

“What I appreciated most [about trellis] was that when we had a challenge or a problem, we could call or email trellis and it was fixed…immediate responses and support that you don’t get with other platforms.” – Linda Cunliffe, President of Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta Club

Soroptimist Surrey/Delta’s online event was so well received that they have been encouraged to submit their virtual event for a Western Canada Region and Federation (Soroptimist International of the Americas) Celebrating Success Award.

In the future, Linda would like to explore blended virtual and in-person events in the hopes of running their annual luncheon locally with global ticketing options to watch the entertainment.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend trellis to other organizations running fundraisers.” – Linda Cunliffe, President of Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta Club

Soroptimist Surrey/Delta didn’t raise as much money as their previous luncheon and credit that to the limitations they had to raffle laws and shipping challenges that limited the amount of silent auctions items they were comfortable with, but they are thrilled that they received more donations this year because people donated if they couldn’t attend. Moving forward to their next event, Linda and her team have reflected on their learnings and are eager to improve and further reimagine their fundraising strategies.

“I have no hesitation running another event on trellis.” – Linda Cunliffe, President of Soroptimist International of Surrey/Delta Club

What Linda loved most about her experience with trellis:

“The service we got, personal service, ease of communication, online live sessions, resource guide to refer to, price was phenomenal, really costing us nothing because people are paying for the service fee.”

In Kelowna, BC, the Stay at Home Gala idea was born. After a successful local virtual gala, Drew Vincent and Trellis, partnered with the Community Foundations of Canada to take the model national. Community foundations across Canada came together to raise money for their own communities and participate in a nation-wide virtual event.

“We’re grateful for Trellis, and their role in the Stay at Home Gala to strengthen communities at a critical time.”

– Dana Decent, Partnerships, Community Foundations of Canada

“The idea was born out of what the future was going to hold. What are galas? What are virtual events? How can this link to a charitable need? Eleven days later, we launched our first gala and raised $23,000.” – Drew Vincent, Lead Volunteer of the Stay at Home Gala

While Drew doesn’t recommend taking on that tight of a timeline, he was thrilled that the trellis fundraising platform made it quick and easy to set up an entire event page.

“Ready-to-use templates, banking transparency, automated tax receipts, trellis made it all possible…trellis is a no brainer for fundraising events.” – Drew Vincent

The purpose of the Stay at Home Gala was very apparent; due to COVID, there has never been such a need for these funds. The Stay at Home Gala was able to support local businesses and help people re-evaluate how intentional they are being moving forward. It also created a space, safe at home, where people could engage with their communities.

“We can escape our living room, go into a gala for a night, and be left with some really thoughtful discussions and ideas for us to come out of it with. It was really amazing, even sitting back and watching it myself, to actually feel like I wasn’t in isolation, I wasn’t in quarantine, it was a really special experience for me and I think we saw that from the results from it.” – Drew Vincent

It was a gala in your own living room, where you could wear business on the top and have your pjs on the bottom. Meals were delivered to people’s homes that they could enjoy with their families as they got to watch the event.

The Stay at Home Gala’s success sparked interest from communities all over North America, who began reaching out asking how it was done. The Stay at Home Gala team partnered with the Community Foundations of Canada to run a National event that focused on getting individual communities to participate, raising funds for their community’s needs.

22 communities across Canada participated in the National event. Each community had their own customized fundraising page, that took minutes to make with a template, that connected to the National fundraising page. The night of the event, each community had their own local virtual silent auctions, live musicians and speakers. For the second half of the evening, the guests from all 22 communities watched the live National broadcast together. World class entertainment brought straight to home, including Lane Merrifield from CBC’s Dragons Den, Gold Medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, Country Music Group Hunter Brothers, Broadcast Journalist Steve Darling, and many more.

After only four weeks of planning, in total, the National event raised $560,000. Each community put the money they raised back into their own community’s needs. Guests loved how transparent the donations were; they knew exactly where their money was going.

“There weren’t any questions about where the funds are going; they went directly to the charities…that’s what pushed the event over the edge, everybody was donating and getting that tax receipts immediately. It pointed out the legitimacy of the event and the fact that this was a charitable event.” – Drew Vincent

Organizations across North America have taken a similar approach and have run their own virtual gala fundraiser.

Interested in doing one yourself? No problem, we have your back. Palma Barbieri, Rotarian of Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary, had never sold a ticket online before running her first virtual gala on trellis. Her club raised more money with their virtual gala than any other event in their 80 plus year history. Read about Palma’s experience here.

Thornbury-Clarksburg (T-C) Rotary was suddenly forced to cancel all their fundraisers when COVID hit. Stuck without any revenue generating events planned, they hosted a virtual event. Believe it or not, this single virtual event raised more money than any other event in the club’s 80 year history.

Hope in the Valley, featuring local entertainers and musicians, dinner partnerships with amazing local restaurants, and an online silent auction that generated a lot of excitement, saved and exceeded their yearly fundraising goals.

In the past, T-C Rotary’s fundraising efforts consisted of a couple large events and a few smaller fundraising campaigns scattered in-between. Their fundraisers have included a golf tournament, evening dinner events, raffle tickets, and a run – you know; all the successful classics! The Rotary club had figured out these events, making them successful year over year.

This all changed when COVID hit. Palma Barbieri, from T-C Rotary, stated that there was “little thought to changing, until COVID.” All of their fundraising strategies, which were primarily face-to-face events, were cancelled. Leaving T-C Rotary in a dire need to find something new.

“COVID threw all our events out the window, none of them could happen.” – Palma Barbieri

Ready to try something new, and jump in with two feet, the club decided “this is where we are getting our money this year, no other fundraisers, we are putting all our eggs in one basket.” With the support of the trellis team, T-C Rotary planned and launched their first ever virtual fundraiser!

“We saw others doing well and they had good things to say. We decided to go with trellis and we are so glad we did.” – Palma Barbieri

Besides a donation button on their website, T-C Rotary had never done any virtual fundraising. And although they were hesitant based on the skill set within their volunteer team, they worked together and confidently tackled the digital aspects, with support from the trellis team, pulling off their most successful fundraiser to date. “We are really happy with the support; trellis was always there. We can’t say enough about the help,” said Barbieri.

With one month, one virtual event, and a small team of volunteers, T-C Rotary raised more money than any other event!

“This event raised more money than any other event in our 80 year history.” – Palma Barbieri

Their virtual gala raised over $40,000, 50% more than the previous biggest event. With only $2,500 in expenses, T-C Rotary donated $39,000 to donate towards their community’s COVID needs. “Trellis is very low cost and takes the headache away from producing all the tax receipts,” said Barbieri.

As the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary looks ahead, they are “going to revisit [their] fundraising strategies, maybe with a mix of virtual and in-person events in the future”.

Palma’s final words: “If you want to run an event, it is worth looking at trellis. The support is there, it was fairly easy to work with the trellis page builder, it allowed us to get up and running quickly with our fundraiser; I would recommend it!”

A week after COVID hit our globe and lockdown began for many communities, Trellis made the decision to waive its fees. Our customers (charities, non-profits, and social enterprises) are helping the most vulnerable in our society. We know they need increased support during this time. Since that change, we are proud to have powered over $600,000 back into communities across North America.

As we start adjusting to a new socially-distant reality and connecting with customers like you, we realized that it is still not the time to resume our fees like before. At the current point, we are going to continue waiving our fees, then reassess on July 1st. Depending on the climate at that time and where our customers are, we will readjust.

“growing and supporting more customers that even before due to this crisis, and adding as much value as possible is our top priority right now.”

We are a social enterprise with a mission to power global collective impact. To do this effectively, we need a revenue stream.
